Open a filing’s source document by accession number
Audience: application and coding agent.

Coverage and source scope

Resolve a filing accession number and return its source document through the available delivery path. The response may be served from a cached copy or redirect to SEC EDGAR; use the source document itself when the exact filed presentation matters.

Source delivery and evidence

Use an accession number from filing search or accession lookup to open the source document. Delivery can use an available cache or redirect to EDGAR, so preserve the accession and final source URL when the filed presentation is evidence. See filing types and exhibits for how document classes relate to a filing. A 404 filing_not_found or filing_url_missing is an unavailable source lookup, not proof that the issuer made no filing.

Failure posture

  • treat non-2xx responses as contract-aware failures, not free-form errors
  • preserve requestId and traceparent in logs and downstream reports
  • if provenance or freshness metadata is present, return it unchanged so trust is not lost in the handoff
